I was sitting in the cafeteria. Everything smelled awful and the food my husband was eating looked unappetizing. I stared at the three ladies laughing at the next table next to us when it hit me.  It hit me hard. Their lives were going on as usual while mine was frozen in grief and fear.

The Importance of Slowing Down

I had somewhere to be but thought I should take my dog for a quick walk first.  He chased a few squirrels up a tree, did what he came to do, and then stopped to sniff some flowers.  He just kept sniffing and sniffing while I tugged at his his leash trying to get him to come home in my haste. I thought about it later and realized that those flowers just happened to be roses.  He was literally "stopping to smell the roses."  I guess maybe he understands living in the moment better than I do.

Some Birds Hop

I always thought bird watching was a daffy use of time. Then I moved to Africa. I began to notice the most beautiful, exotic and peculiar birds. I found myself on safari seeing families of elephants majestically walking across the horizon in a row. Hippo snouts were bubbling and surfacing just enough to breathe while they kept their bodies cool beneath the water. I saw cheetahs cleverly perched in distant trees making it as hard to find them and it is to find Waldo. It was still the vibrant colors, the fantastic nests and behavior of the native birds that really fascinated me.
